Why We Don't Celebrate Lent

Someone asked me today about lenten celebrations and Ash Wednesay.

We certainly see the benefit of fasting whether that be meat of Fridays or total fasts as efforts to draw close to Jesus. Often when people set apart certain days and seasons as “special or holy”- other days are profaned. For instance, yesterday was Fat Tuesday- the last day of Mardi Gras. The reason for the extreme partying and over indulging and debauchery is because Ash Wednesday begins Lent. The idea that is promoted is Lent is holy but we can sin with impunity on the other days. That of course is unbiblical, there are no days that it is 'okay to sin'. So we see little benefit in setting apart the 40 days before the crucifixion as special as a church. I do, however, spend time drawing close to the Lord with prayer and fasting during these days preceeding good Friday as an individual. And I think there is benefit in thinking on the cross all year round.

Certainly there is nothing wrong with a pepper and egg sandwich on Fridays (smile!). But the decision should be individual's. As the calendar moves toward Good Friday it is good to speak with your children about the last week of Jesus’ life. I think that the Roman Catholic Church devised the tradition of giving up something for Lent as a way of identifying with the sufferings of Christ. While at first blush that sounds noble, the scriptural understanding of identifying with Christ has more to do with living a life of righteousness than giving up Bubble Gum, or ice Cream. For instance, Paul writes in Philippians 3.10 "I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead." Clearly, Paul's concern is not dietary in that he emphasizes our becomeing totally submissive to God the father (the way Jesus was at the cross). That kind of spiritual growth is year round and not limited to lent.

Dietary surrenders and the like can lead to a dangerous pseudo-spirituality (see Col 2.20-3.11)We might even think that we have "done something good" when in reality we have found a 'religious' way around being obedient to God and becoming more like Jesus. (Eph 5.1-2)

So we don’t have a special service for Ash Wednesday.

Daley's Failed Gun Policy

Only a ideological moron like Chicago's Mayor Daley would fail to recognize the abject failure of his gun policy. It has been illegal to have any kind of gun in Chicago for an awfully long time. Those of us without ideological blinders on can't help but notice the gun violence in our streets everyday. The Mayor, protected by his contingent of armed security, can stand before microphones and spout his rhetorical objections against the idea of guns on the streets of the city. Unfortunately, illegal guns fill the streets. The only ones without protection in our homes are the law abiding citizens who are left to defend themselves with kitchen knives when the gang bangers and thieves come to call on us.

Perhaps it is time for Americans to arm themselves if they feel it necesary and let the criminals guess whether they will take a .40 caliber round in their chest for breaking into this home or not. But as late as yesterday Daley continued his insanity of desiring to clamp down on the gun laws (could they be any stricter?- you can't even have a bb gun shipped to a Chicago address!). Blaming America's "love affair with guns"- he was unable to see that, as the violence continues, his policy of blaming the gun rather than the shooter has back fired on the people of Chicago.

So maybe the City of Chicago will wise up and dump this guy for a new mayor who will go after the real problem... criminals.

Snow again...

urggghhhh! I am sick of it already. The wind is really howling outside and snow is blowing all over the place. A great day to sit down next to the fireplace, read the paper, and blog.

I am especially grateful these days for what God is doing in my kids. All are serving the Lord Jesus in one capacity or another. I am really proud that they work hard, prioritize education, and serve others. They are great kids!

I keep telling myself I am going to slow down. It doesn't seem that is happening. I really need to... the pace is starting to affect my attitude. (One lady was horrified to see me working on three computers at the same time - a trick that not many can do!- That is what made me think of slowing down) Not exactly sure how to do that. Maybe a Tuesday off every couple weeks or so to do some fishing or to work the beehives. (when I get them going this spring I'll post a video!)I dream of walking the woods, getting the boat out on the lake, shooting my bow, etc when the weather breaks.

Although I hate the snow, I can appreciate the mandatory slowdown of my pace. I guess that maybe the dormancy of this season that we see in the trees and shrubs is there to remind us that we can affford a little dormancy ourselves. Like the Word says... Come unto me and I will give you rest for your souls.... I think I'll go take a nap!

When your Children Lie

Frustrated because your child continues to lie to you in spite of your disciplinary efforts? Dr. Phil has advice.

Understand that lying behavior occurs in both extremes of the parenting continuum.
If you're in a highly permissive environment, kids lie. If you're in a highly rigid and strict environment, kids lie. Parents may wonder, "Why would a child lie in a permissive environment if you give him everything and let him do anything he wants to do?" Children sometimes lie because they have been given too much freedom.

Lying may continue to cover up past lies.If a child has been given too much freedom, he may have had to make choices that he wasn't equipped to make and done things that he now knows were wrong. Lying may continue in an effort to hide those things.

Know that lying is a learned but changeable behavior.
People do what works. If lying has gotten your child what he wants while escaping accountability from you, the payoff is a luring incentive to continue. It's a parent's responsibility not to let it continue by creating consequences.

Don't label your child a liar.People live to their labels. When you label your child a liar, you run the risk of that label becoming an identification and mode of behavior for your child.

Stop believing the lies.
If you have caught your child lying, and in retrospect realize that you were naïve in believing far-fetched stories and excuses, acknowledge your accountability in that and stop being so gullible. You may still desperately want to believe that your child isn't lying to you, but chances are, if his lips are moving, he's lying.

Create consequences your child can predict.
Your child needs to know that if he chooses the lying behavior, he also chooses the consequences. Also, your child needs to be able to predict with 100 percent accuracy what the consequences will be if he lies — not just in words, but in deeds.

Enforce your own rules.
If you don't want to be lied to, enforce the punishment for lying. Many parents think they are giving out punishment when in fact, they aren't. As a parent, you have to be willing to choose the punishment and then police it. For example, if you say there will be no phone privileges for lying, there truly need to be no phone privileges, even if you have to take the phone out of the house.

Why I Admire Ted Haggard

A couple years ago when Ted Haggards hypocrisy and sin was exposed I was shocked, angry and outraged. Like most evangelical Christians I saw his problems as personal hypocrisy. I watched some of his appearance on Oprah the other day and applauded as the queen of day time TV's attempts to demonize the church were turned back and rebuffed by Ted's insistence that he had "greatly sinned". Oprah seemed to want to blame the church for taking a stand against his sinful behavior- even disfellowshipping him. Ted said it was his doing and for the "protection of the church".

Now I will be the first to admit that I don't understand how someones sexuality gets that confused (though he confessed that he had been molested as a child). Neither can I excuse obviously premeditated pursuit of a homosexual sex and drugs. But I can and do admit that I admire Haggard for owning his sin. When he was first exposed he lied to cover his trail of sinful behavior, but he is finding freedom these days in not blaming others for his sin but, instead, owning his "perversion".

I have watched men and women of God fall into sinful behavior over the years. A few have owned their sin and found healing. But many have blamed the pastor or the church or the deacons or the lack of mentoring or the lack of 'real' friendship for their own sin. Those folks never find freedom in Christ- they become bitter whiners and complainers who blame others for their own behavior. Ironically, in their weird psychological need to blame others for their sin they doom themselves to be ever trapped in the memory of events that were their own fault. The cycle of sin and blame another never stops without confession of sin and owning our dysfunction. When someone sins it is because they are "drawn away by their own lusts". Period.

When we disown our sin, we "make God out to be a liar" and our efforts to vindicate our selves prove to the watching world that we are not even as righteous as Ted is. I pray that Ted will find freedom from the sins temptations and thoughts that haunt him. I applaud his desire to face squarely his sin and to recognize that he has forfeited a right to work in ministry. But I also pray that ministers in the church, and Christians in general, will learn to confess their sin when they fail and find healing for their souls.

Obama's Abortion Increases

Imagine- Obama does disregard an unborn human life as much as we were warned before the election. I wonder how long it can be before there comes a tax revolt. When the good citizens of this country refuse to financially participate in the funding of these abortions?

As for those believers who voted for our current president in spite of the warnings of the increased slaughter of unborn, the eroding of advances against this societal blight by the Bush administration, and the hastening of judgment on our nation for this tragedy- repentance is appropriate. The pastors of every strip and color who voted and influenced their flock to vote for the increase of abortions in this nation will be held accountable before a Holy God.

“My people have become lost sheep;

Their shepherds have led them astray.

They have made them turn aside on the mountains;

They have gone along from mountain to hill

And have forgotten their Resting Place.

now back to your regularly scheduled spending orgy

by Michelle Malkin

"The time has come," President Barack Obama told us in his inaugural address, "to set aside childish things." He borrowed the line from Corinthians. With the Beltway bread-and-circus show over, President Obama will now get to work on borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars from you, your children and your grandchildren for a doomed fiscal stimulus.

As President Obama basked in the inaugural glow, a dark cloud of reality moved in over the Democrats' $825 billion plan to rescue the economy. The Congressional Budget Office crunched the numbers and concluded that a huge bulk of the federal spending orgy wouldn't actually kick in until the recession is waning -- if not already over.

The CBO analysis showed that "less than half of the $30 billion in highway construction funds detailed by House Democrats would be released into the economy over the next four years" and "less than $4 billion in highway construction money would reach the economy by September 2010," according to the Associated Press. And those are generous time estimates given the reality of molasses-slow bidding and contracting processes -- bogged down by the usual weight of political wrangling, racial bean-counting and assorted union grievance-mongering.

Just $26 billion out of the $274 billion set aside in the package would reach the economy by the end of the year, the CBO found. That's a mere 7 percent. Moreover, the AP summed up: "Just one in seven dollars of a huge $18.5 billion investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy programs would be spent within a year and a half."

Like I said two weeks ago ("The Generational Theft Act of 2009, Jan. 7, 2009): It's the timing, stupid.

The other incontrovertible truth about this massive wealth transfer is that Washington cannot stop the inevitable lard-up. The original concept of spending on "roads and bridges" has morphed into spending on anything and everything that moves or can be moved. Every moocher in the marketplace wants his grubby paws on the money. And if his or her provision isn't already written into the Democrats' legislation, it will get slipped in under the cover of night.

To wit: Public radio and public television -- already funded with your money to the tune of some $400 million in direct federal handouts and tax deductions for contributions made by individual viewers, not to mention untold state grants and subsidies -- are demanding a hugetastic chunk of the stimulus pie. That's right: Government-supported NPR and PBS want even more of a bailout than they've lived off of for the last 40 years. According to Current.org, which covers public TV and radio, the two entities along with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have petitioned Obama for $550 million in funding to help create more workers suckling on the public teat.

Watching TV is apparently critical to rescuing the American economy. Already stuffed into the Democrats' package is a $650 million bailout -- call it the Boob Tube boondoggle -- to pay for $650 million worth of digital TV upgrade coupons in the wake of the official, government-mandated transition to digital television next month. Not to be left out, the National Endowment for the Arts is on the Santa stimulus list for an additional $50 million cash injection. Oh, and there's another $50 million earmarked "to make up for a lack of philanthropic support for the arts." A breakdown of the spending by House Minority Leader John Boehner's office found an additional $6 billion in buried stimulus treasure for colleges and $166 billion in direct aid to states looking for taxpayers to save them from their profligate spending.

A few conservative Democrats have started murmuring about this looming fiscal nightmare. North Carolina Rep. Heath Shuler expressed concern about the porkification of the bill: "This can't be a Christmas tree." Sen. Kent Conrad told Bloomberg News that "his committee projects the plan will reduce the unemployment rate by 'maybe' 1 percent, or about half of the 3 million jobs Obama has said the plan would generate."

Wake up, taxpayers: This nearly $1 trillion plan is nothing but future-mortgaging ornaments and tinsel boxed in self-delusion. It is time, as President Obama lectured us, to put away childish things -- starting with this epic fail.

The Power of Prophecy

Okay so yesterday we had Tom Stammans minister in morning and evening services. I have to say that Tom has an amazing heart for God's people. FYI true to his word he prophesied over every individual in the church Sunday evening. For those of you who left early Sunday evening-he prophesied for 4 hours and 15 minutes--- accurately! Any one who wanted a word for the Lord came forward and he gave them words of confirmation, words of revelation, and words of direction and encouragement. (Someone said there were 250 in the house Sunday night!) All this is, of course, done under the supervision of pastors and elders.

I am equally impressed by the heart he has for the worlds poor. The abused, the poor, the abandoned children of third world countries are the passion and heartbeat of Tom and his family. I encourage you to hear Tom's heart

I believe that the power of the prophetic is that of real hope. Irrespective of your situation in life it is only made better by a word of hope and direction from the Lord. Too many individuals (and churches!) are run by best guesses, carnal decision making, and desperate choices. Hope is the hunger of this generation. And God is a specialist in this area. Many times over the weekend I heard the Lord encourage someone afar off from the Lord, challenge to radically follow in specific ways (mission trips, business ventures, increasing education, striving for the honor role) and many times I saw the broken heart exposed, and the salve of God's Word applied to the situation. I truly think that the timing for CLC was God ordained!

We believe in pastoring the prophecies. While some churches leave those words unattended it is best if the words are written out and pastored. Discussing the things that are know (confirmations, etc) , the things that are hidden ( hmm what does that refer too), the things that are our responsibility to do (for prophecy speaks to potential- always), and the things that only God can do (these things inform our prayer life!).When prophecy is pastored the impact is doubled. As that word is submitted to the shepherd or elders, there can be accountability, further inspiration, and encouragement to be obedient. So if you are inclined that way please email me and we will try to get you a copy of your prophetic word.

If you were unable to attend this Sunday I am sooo sorry that you missed the services. If you dodged the prophet because of fear- perhaps you need to revisit the gentle character of the Lord in a bible study- he doesn't expose and embarrass, he heals and encourages!. Either way you missed some great services...

Down comes from Geese

Yesterday I sat transfixed as I watched the news describe in absolute awe how a pilot landed a plane in the Hudson river. I was moved. The plane was masterfully guided and landed in the river and the best of humanity demonstrated itself as one after another the passengers were lead off to safety by a menagerie of volunteers and make-shift first responders.

When I think of that plane I think of how wonderfully it is made, how, against all odds it flies, and how much it is worth. It reminds me of the human condition. We are, as humans, wonderfully made and of far greater worth than we can imagine (as evidenced by the price God paid for our souls - His Son!). We are capable of transcendent thought and marvelous dialogue with the Living God. We soar when we are operating according to the Makers manual.

Yet, amazingly, it only takes a couple of well placed geese to bring us down. Airports have done a variety of things to drive out the water fowl that threaten the take-offs of the modern jets. Everything from hawks and dogs, to poisons and mechanical devices. Yet the best efforts of men cannot guarantee that a few strays will not come into the flight path of the air born planes.

I realize that sometimes, in spite of my best efforts to live right, a few geese stray into my path as well. I have been brought low because of the geese of sin and selfishness. My splash down was not attended with nearly the same fanfare as the plane in the Hudson. But I have had many friends and compatriots that have pitched in to pull me out of the drink. So thanks to all my friends who have lifted up this marvelous machine when it was brought low by the stray geese of sin. And to my other friends... watch out for the waterfowl!

Day 16- Opportunities to Serve

Galatians 5:13 “For you, dear friends, have been called to live in freedom, not to satisfy your sinful nature, but to serve one another in love.”

Great News! God wants to use us. Even after all the self examination and the guilt from sin committed in the past. While we have been busy listening, seeking and pursuing God we are finding all the more that while we may be flawed, God still has a plan and use for us. What an amazing God!

As opportunities for service, good deeds, and random acts of kindness are presenting themselves I sense more and more that God enjoys seeing me in action as much as I enjoy seeing him in action! When all is said and done... more is said than done.

As believers we have the ripe opportunities before us to do more, and say less. St Francis of Assisi said it like this- "Preach the gospel at all times -- If necessary, use words." So the Lord is telling us to serve one another in love

Day 14- presence hungered for

Ps 53.2 " God looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God."

There is a longing on the part of God for our fellowship. I know, that seems crazy. After all if there was ever a sufficient one it is God! But for some reason that I can't seem to get a grip mentally on - he wants to be in my presence. During times of extended seeking we can often approach God as if we are the ones hungering for presence- but we are not alone.

Yes, we have our presnece hunger, but God longs for imtimacy with us. This Spirit inside, crying out "Abba, Abba", was his idea. I don't (can't) take credit for my pursuit of him. I am busy running myself in his direction. But like me, he reciprocates my drawing near.

Good news- it makes the pursuit shorter!

Day 11- Business as usual?

By now the tragedy is that for many of us this has become more about food than about seeking. I pulled aside from the normal routine again today, to seek the face of Him who is our source. In the face of blizzard warnings and the need to shovel and pressing meetings and a million other things that I have forgotten to do... I want Him. It is a haunting obsession. It is beyond thought- beneath the wrappings of my life I find the brokenness of my soul and the hunger for the Kings Word and touch.

Even with media turned off one can find a way to get lost in the mundane and fruitless vanity that is our life. God! Make my life count for something Make my souls itch for you to move me to action. God, help my contentment with fruitless works- I want a full on hunger for your presence to so consume me that I ambursting in your presence.

Though my pattern of life is returning- hold me close, Savior, for I am "prone to wander".

I pray for the lost today- The way of the sinner is hard- continue to offer mercy to all sinners Lord- myself included. Amen

Day 6 - Sharpened Senses

Did you see that? Did you hear that? Wow, what we are missing most of the time is a symphany of God. My vision is seeing better in the spirit and in the natural. My hearing of God's voice is growing more clear. For instance, I see how powerful the weaponry of discouragement and frustration are in the lives of God's people. Too many recieve the words of the discouragement as though they were a fair assessment of the facts. But, alas they are not. God is.

God is... present with his children- equipping them and urging them on. Rather than join in the chorus of negative and pejorative verses from the nay sayers the people of God need to remind one another that God is... with us.

God is... alive. He lives and has power to share with his children. What you lack is not all there is... he changes all thing by his very presence.

God is... dear one, he is able to give you the vision and the strength. There is nothing impossible for him. And you are in Him!

You can do all things thru Christ who strengthens you! AWESOME Power is at your finger tips... lift them up to him and ask that your spiritual vision be empowered.

Day 5- Productive Times with Jesus

There are moments, seasons, if you will, that the Lord is close. Day 5 is often like that for me. Scripture jumps off the pages and enlightens the mind; the still small voice of God, once drowned out by the din of the multimedia generation that we live in, seems a bit louder now (though it probably has more to do with my quieting myself than with God speaking up!); and the presence of God- is ever more tangible!

Today a lady cut me off... I felt the Lord actually defusing my anger as the maniac driver flipped me the bird... I sensed the Lord giving me peace as I made the third trip through the emissions test on my truck... I sensed that God was in it and it was all going to be alright as I turned some troubled items over in my head. Where there was a sense of angst there now was rest and trust in the Lord.

In addition, several prayers- major ones that I have been lifting before the Lord came to pass today. I cannot verbalize to man nor God how blessed I am that he has used this moment in time to answer these prayers. Some of them I have been lifting up since July 08 - others for so much longer- yet to see the answers to prayer, and the hearts turn toward God in thanksgiving... I am deeply blessed.

One of the most productive things that we have given up in this fast is television (except News). We have limited our intake of TV to news and christian videos. This has added to our time to pray together. In addition to surrendering (Dan 10.3) sweet bread, meat and wine (though I don't drink) we have given up a few other things as well that have deepened our closeness in marriage. The TV fast has been among the most effective.

In addition, my vision is clearer, headaches gone, sciatic pain has decreased since i increased my water intake to 120 oz per day. Physically, I feel good.

Sunday, January 04, 2009

Day 4- Woe Nelly...

This day on the Daniel Fast is traditionally the day you would start eating a vegetable and whole grain diet. BE CAREFUL on reintroducing these foods to your body. You won't be able to pray if you make yourself sick- and that is very easy to do if you over do it! SO BE CAREFUL.

Keep seeking the Lord!

Day 3- Working on our Attitudes

1 Thessalonians 5.13-24

Live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers,
warn those who are idle,
encourage the timid,
help the weak,
be patient with everyone.
make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,
But always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Be joyful always;
Pray continually;
give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not put out the Spirit's fire;
do not treat prophecies with contempt,
test everything.
Hold on to the good.
Avoid every kind of evil.

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May you whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

It is almost certain that as we seek the Lord we find that our own heart becomes more and more clear to us. Where once we excused certain behaviors- now in the light of his presence- we see our motivations clearly. We find ourselves agreeing with the prophet Jeremiah: Our hearts are deceitfully wicked- beyond cure. This tendency to exempt ourselves from the exhortations and commands of God's Word is evidence that our rebellion runs deeper than we had imagined.

Attitudes toward others
We fool ourselves into thinking that we are too busy to help the weak, or to pressed to be patient, or too busy to warn those idle (lazy) brothers. We excuse our hunger for vengeance, we pick our times for joy when it suits us rather than living out the joy of a heart redeemed. We are ungrateful and thankless more often than not, and so we miss the will of god for our lives.

Attitudes toward God and his Word
We are uncomfortable with the fire of God as it burns and quench it so that it doesn't hinder our fleshly delights. (We do this by our attitudes toward the leading of the pastoral leadership, or by demanding that service be over by noon, or by limiting our response in worship [I will not raise my hands!])We hold those moved by the Spirit in words of prophetic inspiration in contempt because "who are they to challenge me with the truth of the Word?!". (As if the Word is less accurate because it comes through a flawed vessel. Well, the reality is that all vessels are flawed- including the ones that hear the word!) We miss out on the good because we fail in the area of discernment. And we end up embracing evil rather than cleaving to the good that is there.

What our prayer is to be is God's presence. He himself is the only one who can "sanctify us through and through." Our time before him offers him that opportunity- to iron out the wrinkles, to straighten out the bent places in our spirit, to make us holy.

So Lord, hear our prayer. Make your church holy, heal our attitudes. We know that you" the Lord search the heart and examine the mind to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve" (Jer 17.10). Please heal us Lord, according to your will. Amen.

Day 2- Pressing through to Him

"It is God's will that you should be sanctified:... that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen." 1 Thessalonians 4.3,4

The ability to control one's body is developed through the trials of learning to say no to the cries of the flesh and the demands of the body. As we go deeper into the disciplines of the Spirit we find ourselves in sync with the ancient seekers of God.
These learned the disciplines of faith by walking in them. Here there is no slight of hand, no trick, no play acting. It comes down to doing it.

As you fast and pray, you may be experiencing headaches and lethargy. I assume that is normal for this second day. The headaches are likely from caffeine withdrawal. Both symptoms are normal. The goal of increased intimacy will demand from us a persistence and a steadfastness. Intimacy with God is not to be shaped by our feelings or our comfort (though often we succumb to this).

God is present- in the headache and in the lethargy. He is not hiding so much as teaching us. He is teaching us to press through to him. We are like the woman with the issue of blood (Luke 8.40ff). We know that we are sick, and incurably dysfunctional, so we press through the obstructions to touch the Lord. If only we can touch him- he is able to heal. Touch him and the power flows from him.

Remember- He rewards diligent seekers. To that woman Jesus said, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."

On your mark; get set; go...

A long anticipated time of fasting and prayer has begun. Make no mistake- there is no use in fasting if there is no prayer involved in the fast. So one must set their sights upon the goal of God's Presence. Here at the beginning of this time of prayer there is glorious sense of God's blessing already. Just dedicating one's self to seeking the Lord is a step of obedience to God's invitation to intimacy. There is no doubt that there will be blessing in that step. So if you launched 09 with a time of dedicated "seeking"- you WILL be blessed.

Remember- he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. (Heb 11.6)

Exhaustion: A Christmas Tradition

The Christmas season is a time of tradition for our family. Each Christmas eve we have dinner at my moms house. That dinner consists of Ham, baked beans, rice pudding, lutefisk ,
herring, cheese and cracker tray and glug. We exchange gifts with grandma and grandpa, make plans for a fishing trip to Canada in the spring, and generally laugh and make fools of ourselves. (We are brutal teases in our family so if your thin skinned you might want to stay in the kitchen- of course, if you do we will never let you live it down!)

After Grandmas house we go home to let the dogs out and then head for our Christmas eve service. Some light weights can't handle midnight worship- but this has been a family tradition for so long that my kids are tough and sleep deprived already! Folks arrive at the church they see the luminarias that have been painstakingly set out in front of the sanctuary. I was always told that this illumined the way into the church so that (symbolically) Jesus would know that, though we humans missed his first coming- we are ready for the return ( at least some of us are). I have found that it also points to the way into the church building for those who have had too much glug! (not recommended!)

For decades I would return home to put the kids to sleep and assemble toys that that lazy Santa was too 'busy" to assembly before hand. Part A to part B, this sticker here, that one there, and so on. By now I am usually so exhausted that I am slightly delusional. I lay down for what seems like 10 minutes and suddenly the sun is up and I am busy running around making breakfast.

I make bacon and pancakes- swedish pancakes- you know- REAL pancakes. Made from scratch, these bad boys are filled with fruit and whipped creme and covered with syrup. (I could give you the recipe- but I would have to kill you...) Anywho... about the time the bacon is catching fire- the kids arrive from their various places of sleep. We exchange presents and oooohh and awe at the appropriate moments. About this time the dogs begin to eat the wrapping paper that has completely filled the living room (about waist deep). Wading through this mess I head for the kitchen to find a garbage bag to put this stuff in- after all the dogs can't be expected to eat all of it!

A sweater, a couple ties, etc., and it is now a bit behind schedule for the Sirloin roast or Tenderloin that we through in. Asparagus, mashed potatoes, and cherry pie. MMMmmm. good! That smell is biscuits burning because we always forget them! Cleaning up the mess and it is about 6 pm. I am now exhausted and ready for bed. But instead I put my PJ's back on and eat more. When my arm finally gives out from lifting that beef sandwich I turn off the John Wayne movie I am watching and head for bed. An amazing time! a Great family tradition! A wonderful day!

Or is it punishment for something????????

Fasting -- Back To The Future

The Rediscovery of Water-Only Fasting
by Alan Goldhamer, D.C.

Although the notion of electing to go without food for prolonged periods of time to improve one's health has not been something commonly considered in recent times, fasting has a long and important history. In fact, fasting played a vitally large part in early human survival. Fortunately, this ancient knowledge is making a dramatic comeback and is beginning to transform the way modern healthcare providers view their responsibilities to patients.
Human beings have the capability to survive extended periods of fasting. This was certainly known in our hunter-gatherer days, since many humans were forced to live through periods when little or no food was available to them. However, since the advent of agriculture and increasing technological advancement, modern humans have largely lost their awareness of this powerful, innate capability.

For example, the 1937 edition of The New Standard Encyclopedia stated that for humans, “Generally death occurs after eight days of deprivation of food.” By 1956, this grim pronouncement inched somewhat closer to reality. That year’s edition of the American Peoples Encyclopedia stated that survival time in men during water-only fasting ranged from 17 to 76 days.

In actuality, the “authorities” writing in these encyclopedias had no idea what they were talking about—but their conclusions are consistent with what most people might think. However, if we go back in time to earlier writings, we see that more “primitive” cultures were often more aware of the extent of our fasting capability. In the Bible, for example, Moses, David, Jesus, and Elijah were said to have fasted for up to 40 days.

Physiological Benefits of Fasting

Fasting can be thought of as a period of profound rest, during which time your body is free to rapidly undertake a wide variety of beneficial physiological activities, some of which are described below.

1. Neuroadaptation

Fasting helps your taste sensors adapt to a low salt intake. By allowing your body to “neuroadapt” to low salt food, fasting rapidly facilitates the adoption of a health- promoting diet. This process of neuroadaptation appears to take place more rapidly during fasting than merely eating a low salt diet.

2. Enzymatic Recalibration

During fasting your body induces enzymatic changes that can affect numerous systems ranging from detoxification of endogenous and exogenous substances to the mobilization of fat, glycogen and protein reserves. These changes seem to persist after the fasting process, which may explain some of the dramatic clinical changes seen in patients after fasting.

3. Weight Loss

Although fasting is not generally recommended as a primary weight loss strategy, weight loss is a predictable consequence of fasting. Most people average a loss of approximately one pound per day over the course of a fast. (When weight loss is your primary concern, a health- promoting diet coupled with exercise is usually your best approach.)

4. Detoxification

Fasting is generally thought of as a tool to facilitate detoxification, promoting the mobilization and elimination of endogenous substances such as cholesterol and uric acid and exogenous substances such as dioxin, PCBs, and other toxic chemical residue.

5. Insulin Resistance

Fasting appears to have a profound effect on insulin resistance, which is thought to be intimately involved with diabetes and high blood pressure. When your body produces adequate insulin, but it is ineffective due to resistance at the cells in the liver and elsewhere, your blood sugar levels rise. This can lead to serious clinical consequences. Fortunately, after a period of fasting, this problem is often dramatically improved.

6. Naturesis

Water-only fasting induces a powerful naturetic effect, which allows the body to eliminate excess sodium and water from your body. This process allows for the resolution of chronic problems with edema and helps reduce the increased blood volume associated with high blood pressure.

7. Reducing Gut Leakage

When chronic inflammation involves the intestinal mucosa, a condition arises whereby small particles of incompletely digested foods can be absorbed into the blood stream. This introduction of foreign peptide molecules to the blood stream may stimulate an immunological cascade of effects collectively known as gut leakage. In genetically vulnerable individuals, gut leakage may be associated with the aggravation of numerous clinical entities including arthritis, colitis, asthma, allergies, and fatigue.

8. Sympathectonia

Hypersympathectonia (increased tone of the sympathetic nervous system) is thought to be associated with many problems ranging from digestive disturbances to anxiety disorders. Fasting appears to have a profound normalizing effect on the overall tone of the autonomic nervous system.

In all there are many mechanisms through which fasting may be having its profound effect. Further research into these and other areas should prove illuminating.

A Serendipitous Survival

In light of the clear misunderstanding of fasting by the medical profession, the unexpected, successful fasting experience of Henry Tanner, M.D., is truly remarkable. In 1877, Dr. Tanner was a respected, middle-aged physician living in Duluth, Minnesota. He had suffered for years with rheumatism and had consulted with seven fellow physicians, all of whom considered his case to be “hopeless.” He also suffered from asthma, which chronically disrupted his sleep. He spent his waking hours in constant pain.

Tanner had been taught in medical school that humans could live only ten days without food and in this knowledge he found solace. Not believing in suicide, he determined that he would simply starve himself to death. As he stated later, “Life to me under the circumstances was not worth living... and I had made up my mind to rest from physical suffering in the arms of death.” But fate had an agreeable surprise for Dr. Tanner. By unwittingly invoking a constellation of health-promoting responses associated with water-only fasting, he rapidly recovered.

By the fifth day of his fast, he was able to begin to sleep more peacefully. By the eleventh day, he reported feeling “as well as in my youthful days.” Fully expecting that by this point he should be near death, he asked a fellow physician, Dr. Moyer, to examine him. Not surprisingly, Dr. Moyer was amazed.

According to Tanner’s recollection, Moyer told him, “You ought to be at death's door, but you certainly look better than I ever saw you before.” Henry Tanner continued to fast, under Dr. Moyer’s supervision, for an additional 31 days, a total of 42 days in all.

When fellow physicians heard his story, which was sensationalized in the press, they responded with disbelief and intense criticism. Though widely rebuked as a fraud, Tanner at least had the last laugh. After his fast, Tanner had no symptoms of asthma, rheumatism, or chronic pain and lived a full life until he died at the age of ninety.

Human Fasting Capabilities

Many fasts of longer than 100 days have been documented in recent scientific literature, the longest of which was 368 days. At the TrueNorth Health Center in California, we routinely supervise water-only fasts of up to 40 days — and in certain circumstances, even longer.

In our experience, fasting has never been lethal and is often remarkably helpful. During our 20 years of supervising the care of more than 5,000 patients, fasting has proven to be both safe and effective. It has provided many patients a new lease on life.

Reawakening to an Ancient Truth

Throughout most of the 20th century, which witnessed a period of remarkable medical innovation in surgical techniques, radiation therapies, and new “miracle” drugs, the self-healing mechanisms that are unleashed during water-only fasting were largely unappreciated. However, as the century drew to a close, something extraordinary began to occur. After decades of collective awe of modern medicine and its purveyors, a strong undercurrent of disillusionment began to appear. There came the beginnings of a philosophical revolution that would lead health science in a promising new direction.

This new direction centers on the realization that health and healing are best supported when the biological roots of our nature are understood and respected. This new philosophical approach is based on the awareness that health and healing are natural processes. As a result, the focus of attention has increasingly shifted away from the traditional medical emphasis on drugs and surgery toward an exploration of the circumstances and requirements necessary to unleash and enhance these natural processes.

Fortunately, unlike health problems in the past—including such phenomena as water-born diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and epidemics of tuberculosis and pneumonia that at one time were confusing puzzles - our present day epidemics of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer are not nearly so mysterious. It is becoming increasingly clear that the majority of present day health problems are the result of modern dietary excesses.

Simply put, most of our health problems are the result of our eating too much of the wrong things. We ingest too much fat and protein (especially animal fat and animal protein); too much refined sugar and other refined carbohydrates; and too many drugs, including tobacco, coffee, tea, alcohol, and soda. It is not surprising that nearly 50% of American teenagers are overweight when you consider that the average teenager consumes 25% of his or her calories from soda pop.

In the face of the current unprecedented epidemics of disease caused by dietary excess, it is understandable that the ancient healing method of water-only fasting is beginning to make intuitive sense to many people. Going without food for a period of time provides the ultimate opportunity for the reversal of the consequences of dietary excess — a chance to let an overfed and overburdened body take steps to restore health.

Rest assured that the appeal of fasting is not based solely on mere intuition. With the recent publication of the first-ever large-scale study conducted on the use of water-only fasting with life-threatening illness, what was previously considered intuitive has become scientifically apparent. Water-only fasting offers extraordinary potential for health and healing, and for some conditions it appears to be the most effective treatment available.

Fasting and High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is the leading contributing cause of morbidity and mortality in industrialized societies, and is the leading reason for visits to doctors and for the use of prescription medication. It is diagnosed when a patient’s pressures exceed 140/90 mm Hg. The human and financial costs of this condition are staggering.

In 1984, doctors at the TrueNorth Health Center began to investigate the use of fasting in the treatment of this devastating condition. Our study involved 174 high blood pressure patients, all of whom were admitted to the Center for treatment involving water-only fasting.

The results of the study were astonishing. Every patient experienced blood pressure reductions sufficient to eliminate the need for medication, and over ninety percent of patients achieved completely normal blood pressure. A stunning reduction of over 60 points in systolic (upper) blood pressure was noted in those patients with highly elevated pressures (known as Stage III Hypertension), where systolic pressures are greater than 180 mm Hg. These results represent the largest effect size ever shown in lowering blood pressure, and they are estimated to be five times the effect expected from medications alone.

With assistance from our colleagues at Cornell University, our study, “Medically Supervised Water-only Fasting in the Treatment of Hypertension” was completed and accepted for publication by the peer-reviewed and indexed Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. It appeared in the June, 2001 issue of JMPT.

A second study, also conducted at the Center, was recently accepted for publication in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. In this investigation, we evaluated the effect of water-only fasting on 64 patients admitted with so-called “borderline” hypertension. These are individuals who have systolic blood pressures between 120 and 140 mm Hg.

Patients with blood pressures in this range are often led to believe that their blood pressures are “normal.” For example, a patient with a systolic blood pressure of 138/88 would be considered “normal” by conventional medical standards, despite the fact that they are five times more likely to die from a heart attack or stroke than an individual who has a systolic blood pressure of 110 mm Hg. Sixty-eight percent of all deaths attributed to the effects of high blood pressure occur in individuals whose systolic blood pressure is in this range.

The patients in our second study had a mean reduction in systolic blood pressure of 20 mm Hg. The average patient in the study, beginning with a systolic blood pressure of nearly 130 mm Hg, ended his stay with systolic blood pressure of just below 109 mm Hg. This represents a very substantial improvement in health. As just stated, he is now five times less likely to die from a heart attack or stroke than he was before.

Fasting Studies Draw Attention

As a result of the publication of these studies, the fasting program at TrueNorth Health Center attracted the attention of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), a large, national labor union. In March 2001, the Center’s residential health education program, including the supervision of water-only fasting, became a fully covered medical benefit for all union members and spouses who have high blood pressure or diabetes.

In conjunction with this association with IUOE, the doctors at the Center are conducting a third fasting study. It is a prospective study with long-term follow-up to evaluate the use of fasting in the treatment of high blood pressure and diabetes. We are looking not only at the clinical outcomes of the patients (improved health and reduced morbidity), but also the effect on long-term costs of care for the patients who undergo fasting compared to those who choose conventional medical care.

The initial results are outstanding. Based on data from the first group of subjects with one-year follow-ups, the average cost reduction for fasting patients compared to patients receiving conventional medical care appears to be substantial. Once a large enough number of patients have completed the program and the long-term outcomes are calculated, we expect to publish additional papers documenting what appears to be a tremendously cost effective approach to managing these high risk, high medical cost, high blood pressure and diabetes patients.

Hope for the Future

Hopefully, these results of the TrueNorth Health Center’s studies will be a contributing force in both a philosophical and practical revolution in health care. With clear and convincing evidence to guide them, and substantial cost savings to motivate them, other unions and insurance companies may decide to encourage and support the use of fasting for those they serve. In doing so, they could make available to the millions of sick and suffering patients the most profound health rediscovery of our time — the understanding that fasting allows the body to heal itself without the risk and excess cost associated with conventional medical care and drug use.
